A milestone for Indian Railways
The launch is more than just the introduction of a new train. It reflects Indian Railways efforts to adopt cleaner technologies while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels. During the flag-off ceremony, PM Modi described the project as another example of Indias push towards innovation and self-reliance under the Make in India initiative.

Why this train is different?
Unlike diesel-powered trains, this train runs on hydrogen fuel cells. Electricity is generated through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The only by-product is water vapour, making the train virtually free from harmful emissions during operation. This technology is expected to play a key role in reducing pollution in the transport sector.

The route it will cover
The hydrogen-powered train will initially run on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana. The route has been chosen as part of a pilot project to evaluate the performance of hydrogen-powered rail operations under Indian conditions before considering wider deployment across the railway network.

Built with Indian technology
The project has been developed using indigenous technology. Indian Railway agencies and domestic manufacturers worked together to design, integrate and test the train. Officials said the project reflects Indias growing capability in developing advanced railway technology within the country.
