Vande Mataram To Open Independence Day Ceremony At Red Fort

India’s Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort will have a new opening this year. For the first time, Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the historic monument as part of the official August 15 programme. The change comes in a year when India is marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, the National Song that played a major role during the freedom movement.

Why Vande Mataram Is Being Highlighted This Year

The timing of the decision is closely linked to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The government has been holding programmes across the country to mark the milestone. The year-long commemoration began in November 2025 and includes cultural programmes, public events, competitions and musical performances.

The song has remained closely associated with India’s freedom struggle. It was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and became one of the most recognisable patriotic songs during the movement against British rule.

According to the Defence Ministry, Vande Mataram will be sung after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaches the ramparts. The national flag will then be hoisted, after which the Prime Minister will deliver his Independence Day address. The national anthem will follow the flag-hoisting ceremony.

150 Years Of A Song That Became A Symbol Of Freedom

After Independence, Vande Mataram was given the status of India’s National Song. The Constituent Assembly recognised its historic importance and accorded it an honoured position alongside the National Anthem. The 150-year commemoration is therefore not simply about a song. It is also about revisiting a part of India’s political and cultural history.

Few songs in India have had the political impact that Vande Mataram had during the freedom struggle. The song was heard at public gatherings and became part of the wider nationalist movement. Independence Day 2026 Will Also Focus On Young India

The Red Fort programme will not be limited to the history of Vande Mataram. This year’s other major theme is Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047. The Defence Ministry said the celebrations would highlight achievements of young people and their role in helping India become a developed country by 2047.
