Tamil Nadu: The results of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections surprised everyone this time. At some places the value of each vote was understood and at some places the foundations of the old power were shaken. This election was very special in many ways.
What happened on Tirupattur seat will probably be remembered for a long time in electoral history. DMK minister K. R. Periakaruppan was contesting from here and the contest was very tough. When the vote counting was completed, his rival Seenivas Sethupathi had received 83,375 votes and Periyakruppan was exactly one vote behind. Just one vote. Losing by such a narrow margin despite holding the post of minister, it was enough to surprise anyone.
There can hardly be a better example than this to explain the importance of voting in democracy. For those who wonder what a difference a single vote makes, this Tirupattur result is a befitting reply. There was a difference of just one vote between victory and defeat.
Talking about the results of the entire state, Tamilag Vetri Kazhagam i.e. TVK emerged as the largest party. By winning 108 seats, this party has played a big innings in the politics of Tamil Nadu. DMK got 59 seats and AIADMK stood third with 47 seats.
The performance of smaller parties remained limited. Indian National Congress got 5 seats while Pattali Makkal Katchi got 4 seats.
Looking at these results, it seems that the politics of Tamil Nadu has come to a new turning point. This big victory of TVK makes it play an important role in forming the government. This emergence of a new force among the old stalwarts like DMK and AIADMK — that is what makes this election different from other elections.
On one hand, the defeat of the minister by one vote, on the other hand, the political equations changed in the entire state – this election of Tamil Nadu will be in discussion for a long time to come.
