This year begins with the Adhik Maas, also refered as Purushottam maas. It is a lunar month that the Hindu calendar inserts roughly once every three years to realign its lunar and solar cycles.

The origin of this month goes to the ancient texts. According to age-old vaidic text,"it as an unclaimed month that no deity wished to govern, then Lord Vishnu adopted it and elevated its status above all others."
