Is the SUV era slowing down? For months, Hyundai’s Creta ruled the roads as India’s most sought-after vehicle. But in a surprising twist this May, it’s a sedan not an SUV that has taken the crown. It now comes in four petrol models LXi, VXi, ZXi, ZXi+ with CNG versions in VXi and ZXi models. So, what changed? Did the SUV hype finally crack? Or has the all-new Dzire really become that good? Here's a summary of why the Dzire is the new Indian road king.
After a temporary slide behind the Hyundai Creta in April, Maruti Suzuki's Dzire has staged a resounding comeback in May 2025. With 18,084 units off the lot, the Dzire isn't India's top-selling car this month it's sending a message, too.
Sedans aren't finished yet.
Rolling out in November 2024, the fourth-generation Dzire is a ground-up change. From styling to performance, it's all been reimagined. It now has four petrol variants LXi, VXi, ZXi, ZXi+, with CNG variants in VXi and ZXi trims.
The 2024 Dzire is not like its earlier version at all. With thin LED DRLs, crystal head lights, shark-fin antenna, and dual-tone alloy wheels, the new Dzire looks premium almost like a compact luxury sedan, rather than a budget sedan.
Inside, you'll get wood-finish inserts, a light beige cabin hue, and a segment-first voice-activated sunroof. Infotainment is a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, supported by a 6-speaker setup and wireless charger. And did we forget to mention the 360-degree camera?
Equipped with a 1.2L Z-series 3-cylinder petrol motor, the Dzire is available in manual and AMT. The petrol variant returns up to 25.71 km/l, while the CNG variant offers 33.73 km/kg industry-best mileage by a wide margin.
Safety comes first. The new Dzire is rated 5-stars by Bharat NCAP, and features:
With SUVs ruling the Indian landscape in the last few years, Dzire's return might signal a sedan revival, particularly for price-conscious buyers seeking comfort, safety, and mileage.
The Dzire's victory isn't a sales number game it's one of intent. When the SUV trend appeared unbeatable, a nicely packaged, fuel-effective sedan dented the leader board. And this time, it's not hype it's design, performance, and economy in synergy.
