Tesla is finally entering the Indian automobile market, with its official debut set for July 15, 2025. The electric vehicle (EV) giant is expected to launch the Model Y, a popular electric SUV, as its first offering in India.
The company has selected Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) as the location for its first showroom in Mumbai, India. The 24,566 sq. ft. space will act as an experience centre where customers can explore the brand’s products and technologies. Tesla is also hiring staff for sales and service operations in Mumbai and Delhi, indicating Delhi will be its next showroom location.
The Model Y is set to enter the Indian market as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. To date, Tesla has brought in six units of the Model Y, along with Superchargers and accessories valued at nearly $1 million, sourced from both China and the United States.
Long Range RWD: Offers a range of 574 km, accelerates 0–96 km/h in 5.4 seconds.
AWD Version: Range of 526 km, 0–96 km/h in 4.6 seconds.
Both variants have a top speed of 200 km/h, a coupe-like silhouette, LED lighting, 19-inch wheels, and a spacious interior with a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch rear display. Tesla’s Autopilot and over-the-air updates are expected, though Autopilot’s performance in India remains uncertain.
Prices are expected to be between ₹50 lakh and ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the model. This includes a 70 per cent import duty, placing the Model Y in the premium electric vehicle category. In the U.S., prices start at around ₹32.25 lakh (RWD) and go up to ₹35.69 lakh (AWD).
Although Tesla has reportedly paused its plans for a local manufacturing unit, positive market reception could lead to local assembly (CKD) in the future.
Tesla’s entry into India comes at a time when the country is witnessing rapid growth in clean mobility solutions. With the launch of the Model Y, Tesla brings its global innovation and brand appeal to Indian roads, signalling a big leap forward in the nation’s EV journey.
