Business News: The electric vehicle (EV) market in India is growing rapidly, and all eyes are on the entry of Tesla, the leading company in this sector, into India. But in the meantime, the tough stance of US President Donald Trump has had a major impact on Tesla's plan. Trump had openly said that Tesla's manufacturing plan in India would be "wrong," which forced the company's CEO, Elon Musk, to rethink his strategy.

Trump's comment came in February, after which Tesla stopped the plan to produce vehicles in India for the time being. According to Union Industry Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Tesla currently wants to open only showrooms in India and sell vehicles through imports.

Tesla's first priority in India: Opening showrooms and increasing sales

Elon Musk had long expressed his desire to enter the Indian market, but the company faced many obstacles due to the country's tough policies and trade conflicts. Now Tesla has made a strategic decision that it will focus on selling vehicles in India instead of direct production.

According to media reports, Tesla has selected several locations in India for showrooms and has advertised for more than 20 positions. This makes it clear that the company may soon start selling vehicles in the country, but they will be imported vehicles.

Challenges for Tesla on price, servicing and sales model

The price of electric vehicles in India is the biggest issue. Tesla's cheapest Model 3 costs around $42,490 (about Rs 37 lakh) in the US, which will become more expensive in India due to heavy import duty and tax. This can prove to be very expensive for Indian customers.

Apart from this, vehicles are mostly sold in India through dealerships, while Tesla works on a model of selling vehicles directly to its customers. Because of this, the company may have to change the way of sales and servicing to be successful in the Indian market.

EV market in India: Fast growing opportunity

The electric vehicle market in India is still in its early stages but is growing rapidly. While only 5,000 EVs were sold in 2020, this number has crossed 113,000 in 2024. Experts believe that Tesla's entry can open new opportunities for expensive electric vehicles.

According to Ravi Bhatia, president of automotive consultancy Jato Dynamics, Tesla has huge potential in India's premium segment. However, it is still not clear whether Tesla will go full-fledged in India, which will be crucial to the company's success.

Tesla's prospects and challenges in India

Elon Musk has recently hinted that Tesla may introduce affordable EV models for India in the first half of 2025. If successful, the plan will give a new impetus to the electric vehicle industry in India. Still, Tesla faces several challenges — high prices, production costs, government policies, and consumer habits. All of these will impact the company's expansion plans in India.

Donald Trump's tough stance has forced Tesla to change its plans. Now Tesla's strategy is to focus on sales first and consider production later. The coming months will give indications of Tesla's visit to India and its success.
