New Delhi: While the decision to cancel the NEET exam has put an end to fears of rigging, it has also created a mountain of uncertainty for millions of candidates. A year of hard work, sleepless nights, and the dream of becoming a doctor have now been put on hold. While this step to protect integrity amid allegations of paper leaks is justified, the real question now is for those students who are mentally and physically devastated. What next? Is this re-examination merely a date change or another difficult test of students' patience?

What did NTA say?

Along with the major announcement of canceling the NEET exam, which was held on May 3, the NTA posted on the social media platform X, urging students to remain calm and sharing some points.

The agency stated that based on inputs from investigative agencies and reports from law enforcement agencies, it was not considered appropriate to continue with the examination process.

Why was the decision taken?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has shared important information related to NEET UG 2026 with candidates, parents, and the general public. The agency stated that on May 8, 2026, certain matters were referred to central agencies for fair investigation and verification, which led to the cancellation of the exam. This step was taken to ensure that the national examinations are conducted in a completely transparent, secure, and reliable manner.

Based on information received from central agencies and law enforcement agencies, and investigation reports, the NTA determined that the possibility of irregularities in the examination process cannot be ignored. Consequently, with the approval of the government, the National Testing Agency has decided to cancel the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on May 3. The examination will be rescheduled for a new date to be announced later.

Based on the information received by the NTA and the investigation reports from law enforcement agencies, it has been determined that continuing with the current examination process is inappropriate. The examination will be rescheduled, and the dates will be announced soon. A complete schedule for the issuance of new admit cards will be released on the NTA's official website and other official channels in the coming days.

Is the case handed to CBI?

The NTA stated that the government has referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough and in-depth investigation. The NTA also stated that it will fully cooperate with the investigation and will provide the CBI with all necessary documents, records, and information to ensure a proper investigation.

Will there be a re-examination?

This decision has been taken in the best interests of students and because the country's examination system relies on public trust. A re-examination will be conducted. The new exam dates will be officially announced soon. The NTA has stated that transparency and fairness will be ensured throughout the process.

The agency said that if this step had not been taken, it could have caused further damage to trust in the examination system, which would not have been repaired for a long time.

What about data and fee information?

All the details of the candidates who had already applied for the May 2026 session and their chosen examination centres will remain valid for the re-examination.

Students will not need to re-register and will not be charged any additional fees. Furthermore, any fees previously deposited will be refunded. NTA will re-conduct the exam using its own resources to ensure a smooth completion of the process.
