Asrani's Diwali Message: Senior Bollywood actor and renowned comedian Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 84 years old. His last rites were performed at the Santacruz crematorium, attended by close family members. Asrani's manager, Babu Bhai Thiba, told ANI, "Asrani passed away at 3 pm today at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew."

Fans moved by final post

A few hours before his death, Asrani shared a Diwali message on his Instagram story. He posted this at around 2 pm. This made fans even more saddened by the news of his passing. However, it is believed that this post may have been made by his staff or a family member.

A five-decade illustrious career

Asrani appeared in over 350 films in a film career spanning over 50 years. He was immensely popular with audiences for his impeccable comic timing and expressive performances. He began his career in the 1960s and became one of Hindi cinema's most reliable character actors in the 1970s. His memorable films include Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafoo Chakkar.

In later years, he appeared in hit comedy films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal, Bunty Aur Babli 2, R... Rajkumar, All the Best, and Welcome.

The Jailer in 'Sholay' became an iconic character

Asrani's unique portrayal of the jailer in the 1975 superhit film Sholay is still considered one of the most memorable comic roles in Indian cinema. Asrani not only acted but also made a name for himself in writing and directing. In 1977, he wrote, directed, and starred in the film "Chala Murari Hero Banne." This film was critically acclaimed. He subsequently directed films such as "Salaam Memsaab" (1979) and remained active in Gujarati cinema for a long time. Asrani is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, his sister, and a nephew. The couple had no children.
