Mumbai: The controversy regarding the song 'Sarke Chunri Teri' - featuring Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt and actress Nora Fatehi - shows no signs of abating. The National Commission for Women (NCW) held a hearing regarding this matter on Monday. During his appearance before the Commission, Sanjay Dutt not only presented his defense but also took a significant step by offering an apology.
The Commission had, in fact, summoned Sanjay Dutt in response to allegations concerning the song's objectionable lyrics and the charge that it offended the dignity of women. In a video shared by news agency PTI on social media, Sanjay Dutt can be seen entering the NCW office in Delhi. He was mobbed by media personnel but declined to offer any comments regarding the matter.
Following the notice received from the National Commission for Women, Sanjay Dutt personally appeared at their Delhi office on Monday. The Commission had received numerous complaints regarding the song's content, with critics deeming it objectionable to society and women. As part of the investigative process, Sanjay Dutt appeared before the panel to present his perspective.
During the hearing before the Commission, and acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Sanjay Dutt tendered his apology. Furthermore—taking a positive initiative—he submitted an undertaking pledging to bear the entire educational expenses of 50 tribal children. The Commission had adopted a firm stance regarding the alleged obscenity in the controversial song, following which Sanjay Dutt assured them of his full cooperation in the investigation.
It is worth noting that actress Nora Fatehi also features in the same song; consequently, the Women's Commission has issued a summons to her as well. During the previous hearing, Nora was represented by her lawyer—a move the Commission rejected. The Commission has now made it clear that Nora must appear before the panel in person, and she has been granted a final opportunity to do so.
This song from 'KD: The Devil' had been facing criticism ever since its release. The Commission also rejected the argument put forth by those associated with the song, in which they claimed they were unaware of its meaning or potential impact. The Commission sternly stated that one cannot evade responsibility by offering such justifications. Following intense controversy and the intervention of the Women's Commission, the song has now been removed from YouTube as well.
