Mumbai: Asha Bhosle, the legendary voice of Indian music, is no longer amongst us; yet, her life was not confined merely to the realm of melodies. This is the story of a woman who garnered applause on stage but, in her private life, endured multiple phases of pain, struggle, and heartbreak. She breathed her last on April 12, 2026, at the age of 92, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

Two marriages, one failed and painful relationship, followed by a true love... and a tragedy involving her children—a sorrow deep enough to shatter anyone to their very core. Let us learn about both of her husbands and explore those facets of her personal life that forged her into the strong woman she became.

How were Asha Bhosle's early years?

Born on September 8, 1933, Asha was the daughter of the great classical vocalist Dinanath Mangeshkar and the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar. However, at the tender age of nine, she lost her father. The family was plunged into a financial crisis. Consequently, at a very young age, Asha and Lata began singing to support their household. It was here that Asha Bhosle's struggle truly began.

Who was Asha Bhosle's first husband, Ganpatrao Bhosle?

Asha Bhosle's first marriage was nothing short of a tragedy. When she was merely 16 years old, she fell in love with Ganpatrao Bhosle, her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar's secretary. Ganpatrao was 15 years her senior—meaning he was 31 years old at the time.

Her family—and particularly her elder sister, Lata Didi—were strictly opposed to this relationship; however, Asha, blinded by love, heeded no one and eloped to get married. As a result of this decision, her family severed all ties with her, refusing even to speak to her. Yet, the very place she believed would be her sanctuary marked the beginning of the darkest phase of her life.

Initially, the relationship seemed loving, but it soon devolved into a harrowing ordeal. She received no respect in her marital home; instead, she faced domestic violence and physical abuse, enduring both mental and physical torment. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that Asha Bhosle was compelled to end the marriage.

Shortly after the wedding, the true colors of Ganpatrao and his family were revealed. The 16-year-old girl was not only subjected to mental harassment in her marital home but was also physically assaulted. She became a victim of domestic violence.

This painful relationship, which lasted 11 years, finally came to an end when she was thrown out of the house along with her children. At that time, Asha-ji was pregnant. The suffering inflicted by her in-laws, combined with her severed ties with her own family, left her so shattered that she even contemplated ending her life. However, for the sake of her children, she found the strength to rise again and shouldered the responsibility of raising them entirely on her own.

Who Was Asha Bhosle's Second Husband, R.D. Burman?

Nearly 20 years after the dissolution of her first marriage, the renowned music composer Rahul Dev Burman (Pancham Da) entered Asha-ji's life. In 1980, at the age of 47, she married R.D. Burman in her second marriage. Interestingly, Pancham Da was six years younger than Asha-ji, and for both of them, this was their second marriage.

However, this marriage, too, was not without its challenges. R.D. Burman's mother was strictly opposed to the union and had warned that the marriage would take place "only over her dead body." Yet, following his father's passing—and amidst his mother's deteriorating mental health—R.D. Burman could not bring himself to abandon Asha-ji; he stood by her and married her. The couple spent 14 years together before R.D. Burman passed away in 1994.

R.D. Burman was one of the most successful music directors in Hindi cinema. He composed music for over 300 films and delivered numerous superhit songs in collaboration with Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, and Asha Bhosle.
