Afghanistan Hit by 4.1 Magnitude Earthquake, Quake Centered 130 KM Deep

Kabul: The earth shook again in Afghanistan on Monday morning. People felt strong tremors of the earthquake early in the morning. National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that the intensity of the earthquake was 4.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred at 5:36 am Indian time at 5:36 am 23 seconds. Most of the people were sleeping at that time, hence there was chaos.

At what depth was the epicenter of the earthquake?

According to NCS, the epicentre of this earthquake was about 130 kilometres below the ground. Its location has been recorded as 36.114 degrees north and 70.820 degrees east. This area is near the Hindu Kush region, where earthquakes occur frequently. The matter of relief is that the earthquake was at a great depth, hence not much effect was seen above. If this earthquake had occurred at a depth of 10-20 kilometres, the damage could have been huge.

Is there news of any damage?

There has been no news of any loss of life or property so far. The local administration in Afghanistan is also keeping an eye on the situation. NCS is continuously tracking earthquake activity. It is worth noting that earthquakes have occurred several times in Afghanistan in the last few months. Hindukush hill area is considered very sensitive from earthquake point of view. Here the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, due to which tremors occur frequently.

Why do so many earthquakes occur in Afghanistan?

Experts say that this entire belt of Afghanistan, Pakistan and North India falls in the earthquake zone. Here there is movement in the plates under the ground. Deep focus earthquakes occur especially in Hindukush, which occur at a depth of 100 to 200 kilometres. Therefore, sometimes even if the intensity is high, the damage is less. At present, people do not need to panic, but precaution is necessary. During an earthquake, going out of the house to an open place is considered the safest.
