Tehran: The first phase of direct talks between America and Iran ended in Islamabad late Saturday night. This marathon meeting, which lasted for about 14 hours, is being considered an important step in the relations between the two countries. The atmosphere was definitely serious, but the conversation seemed to be moving in a positive direction.
During the meeting, both the sides not only discussed but also shared written documents based on the day's talks. Now technical teams are working further on these documents. It is clear from this that the talks are not just formal but are moving towards some concrete result.
Vice President JD Vance led the delegation from the US side. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were also present with him.
On the Iranian side, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and senior diplomat Ali Bagheri Kani were included. Pakistan is playing the role of mediator in this entire process.
According to Iranian media reports, this period is considered very important and in a way it is also being called the “last chance”. It is clear from the meeting that lasted till late night that both sides are under pressure to reach a conclusion this time.
Iran had already made clear what its priorities were—control over the Strait of Hormuz, return of frozen assets, compensation for war damages and a permanent ceasefire at the regional level. He is especially concerned about the situation in Lebanon.
Even though talks are going on on the table, the tension on the ground has not completely ended. Activity of drones and fighter planes was seen in the skies of Beirut, while Hezbollah claimed retaliatory action. It is clear that the situation still remains delicate.
In view of this high-profile interaction, tight security arrangements were made across the city. Thousands of security personnel were deployed and lockdown like conditions were seen in many areas. The delegations of both the countries had reached here on Friday, where the top leaders of Pakistan welcomed them.
