New Delhi: The US Defense Department (Pentagon) and defense manufacturing company Lockheed Martin have signed a major agreement. Under this, it has been decided to increase the production of PAC-3 MSE, the most advanced missile of the Patriot Air Defense System, three times as compared to now. Its purpose is to strengthen the air defense capabilities of America and its allies.

How many missiles will be made now, and for how long?

Till now about 600 PAC-3 MSE missiles were manufactured every year. Under the new agreement, this number will be increased to about 2,000 missiles. This progress will be achieved gradually over the next seven years, resulting in a huge increase in production capacity.

Why is this increase necessary?

The Pentagon and defense experts say the threat of air and missile attacks is increasing around the world. Due to situations like Russia-Ukraine war and conflict in the Middle East, the demand for advanced air defense missiles has increased significantly. In such a situation, America and its allies are feeling the need for these missiles even more.

Will this agreement benefit only America?

The impact of this scheme will not be limited to America only. PAC-3 missiles are supplied to the US as well as at least 16 other countries that have the Patriot system. Increasing production will also help these countries to strengthen their air defense networks.

What is the strategy behind increasing production?

The Pentagon has given this long-term order to Lockheed Martin under its new weapons acquisition model so that the company can make the necessary investments to increase production and strengthen the supply chain. This will also improve the availability of missiles in the future.

Does this plan still need Parliament's approval?

A 2026 funding proposal for detailed implementation of the agreement remains to be approved by the US Congress. Unless financial approval is obtained, expansion of production will not begin in full force.
