Gothenburg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a tour of four European nations. On the second leg of this tour, he arrived in the Swedish city of Gothenburg on Sunday, May 17. Here, he received a grand welcome. Sweden bestowed upon him its highest honor, and discussions were held between the two nations on several major issues.

PM Modi is currently touring four European countries. Sweden marks the second stop on this itinerary. He is scheduled to stay in Sweden for two days—May 17 and 18. Prior to this visit, Modi had visited Sweden in 2018, when the first India-Nordic Summit was held there. Thus, he has returned to Sweden after a gap of approximately seven years.

How was PM Modi welcomed by Sweden?

As soon as PM Modi's aircraft entered Swedish airspace, Gripen fighter jets from the Swedish Air Force flanked his plane. These aircraft escorted Prime Minister Modi's plane all the way to Gothenburg Airport, providing it with a protective cordon.

This gesture serves as a symbol of great honor. Escorting a Head of State in this manner—specifically by deploying fighter jets to accompany their aircraft—demonstrates the immense importance the host nation attaches to that leader.

At Gothenburg Airport, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson personally arrived to welcome PM Modi. This, too, is a noteworthy occurrence, as it is not customary for a country's Prime Minister to personally go to the airport to receive a visiting leader. In doing so, Sweden accorded Prime Minister Modi a special honor.
