Washington: Ever since the Chinese homeland was violenly split into two parts in 1949 following a bloody civil war, China and Taiwan have been at loggerheads. For the better part of a century, China has refused to to recognise Taiwan as an independent country, treating the island nation as a breakaway province. A threat now looms over Taiwan's very existence. Within the next five years, China could unleash devastation upon it. This warning comes not from just anyone, but from US President Donald Trump's own advisors.

The US President's advisors believe that, following this visit, China may take steps toward launching an attack on Taiwan. The American news outlet 'Axios' has reported on this matter. The US President's advisors have raised concerns regarding China's intentions. According to these sources, the atmosphere remained highly charged even during the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

What Did China President Xi Jinping Say?

One of Trump's advisors stated that Xi Jinping seeks to fundamentally alter China's role on the global stage. According to this advisor, Xi has explicitly told the U.S., "We are no longer merely an 'emerging power.' We stand as your equals, and Taiwan belongs to us." The U.S. President's advisor remarked that one thing has become abundantly clear from this visit: Taiwan will remain in the crosshairs for the next five years.

What Will Be Global Repercussions?

U.S. advisors have also issued a warning regarding the potentially disastrous impact a Chinese attack on Taiwan could have on the global technology sector. They noted that there is no viable way to prepare for such an eventuality from an economic standpoint. Furthermore, the stability of the global chip supply chain would be severely jeopardized. Meanwhile, when asked whether he would delay a proposed $14 billion arms deal for Taiwan, Trump responded that the matter now rests entirely with China. It is worth noting that Trump has already approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan; this package received final congressional approval from the U.S. Congress last December.

What is the Relationship Between the US and Taiwan?

In response to these developments, China conducted live-fire military exercises. Even during the summit with Trump, China characterized the U.S. as its most significant partner in terms of bilateral relations. For his part, Trump also captured everyone's attention in Taiwan. He issued a direct appeal to Taiwan's world-leading microchip industry, urging them to relocate their operations to the United States. "I would like everyone involved in chip manufacturing in Taiwan to come to America," Trump stated. Meanwhile, Taiwan has also issued a swift response. Taiwan has stated that there has been no diminution in U.S. policy or in its tilt toward the island.
