Dhaka: Proloy Chaki, a distinguished Hindu artist and local political leader in Bangladesh, has died in police custody. Chaki was 60 years old and was kept in custody amid the political turmoil and violence there. His family has questioned the police's contention that he died of "natural" causes. The family says that he was not given necessary treatment, due to which the situation became serious.
Chaki was detained by the police from his house on 16 December. Authorities said the arrest was linked to a blast case linked to the 2024 protest movement, but the family said they were not named in the case. His health deteriorated during custody, after which he was taken to the hospital, but he died during treatment on Sunday evening.
The Superintendent of Pabna Jail gave a statement that Chaki had been suffering from diabetes, heart disease and other health problems for a long time. He said that Chaki was first taken to Pabna General Hospital and then when his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he breathed his last during treatment. The officer also said that it was a natural death.
Chaki's son alleged that he did not receive proper treatment in police custody and that despite his health deteriorating, the family was not informed on time. The family says that if he had gotten the right treatment on time, his life might have been saved. Some local supporters and culture lovers have also expressed displeasure over this incident.
Proloy Chaki was not just a leader but also a renowned musician and cultural organizer. He was associated with society and culture for a long time and was well known in the local community. His death comes at a time when there are increasing reports of violence and tension targeted at minorities and politically connected people in Bangladesh, making the issue even more sensitive.
The family and several political groups are demanding an independent investigation into the matter. Critics and human rights advocates say serious questions arise about the safety and treatment of detainees, especially when they are suffering from illness. At present, the administration has not confirmed any irregularity on the part of the police officers, and the matter is under further investigation.
