Dhaka: Sharif Usman Hadi, a prominent leader associated with the rebellion in Bangladesh in July last year and spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, died in Singapore on Thursday night. He was admitted to a private hospital there. A week ago, he was shot in the head by unknown assailants, after which his condition remained very critical. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, he could not be saved.
Chief adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed Hadi's death in a message to the nation. He said that Sharif Osman Hadi was one of the faces of the July uprising who stood at the forefront. Yunus described it as a deep blow to the country and said that Hadi's fight and courage will always be remembered.
Yunus clearly said that those responsible for Hadi's murder will not be spared under any circumstances. He assured immediate action to arrest the culprits and declared a day of state mourning in the country.
It was told by the family that the doctors had advised surgery as a last attempt. The family had agreed to this, but Hadi died just a few hours before the surgery. This news proved to be a big shock for the family and supporters.
As soon as the news of the death spread, a large number of people gathered in the Shahbagh area of Dhaka. Protesters chanted slogans, blocked roads, and demanded justice for Hadi. Many people accused the administration of inaction and said that concrete action was not taken even after the attack.
Meanwhile, leaders and workers of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti took out a separate procession from the Teacher-Student Centre. The march passed through different parts of the university campus, where tension was seen regarding security arrangements.
Hundreds of students of Rajshahi University took out a protest march, which left the campus and reached the city center. During this, a party office of the banned Awami League was vandalized, which further increased the tension in the entire area.
The assassination of Sharif Usman Hadi has once again raised serious questions on political violence, security of leaders, and law and order in Bangladesh. People across the country are now making only one demand: that those responsible behind this massacre should be punished soon.
