International News: The Chinese government has ended all relations with Czech President Pavel in response to his meeting with the Dalai Lama. Petr Pavel went to Ladakh in India to meet the Dalai Lama last month. China announced on Tuesday that it has ended all relations with Czech Republic President Petr Pavel in protest against his meeting with the Dalai Lama last month.
"Despite China's repeated protests and strong opposition, Pavel met with the Dalai Lama," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a statement. Pavel met the controversial Tibetan figure on July 27 in India's Ladakh region, which borders China.
Lin said, "This is a serious violation of the political commitment made by the Czech government to the Chinese government and harms China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." The ministry spokesperson further said, "China strongly condemns and strongly opposes this. The ministry has described Pavel's move as a provocative action and has decided to end all relations with the Czech president.
China took control of Tibet in 1951 and described it as a "peaceful liberation." After a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala in northern India, where he has set up a Tibetan parliament and government-in-exile. However, China does not recognize this government and says Tibet has been part of China since the 13th century.
The Dalai Lama claims that Tibet was an independent state when the Chinese People's Liberation Army entered the region. The Dalai Lama has been living in India for a long time and is leading the campaign for Tibet's independence from here.
