International News: China has introduced a new visa category, the "K visa," to attract young and skilled professionals from around the world. This move specifically targets graduates and researchers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. According to Chinese officials, this visa will be effective from October 1, 2025.

Experts are describing it as the China version of the US H-1B visa. This visa has started at a time when many countries have tightened their work visa rules. Recently, the US implemented a $1 million annual fee on the H-1B visa, which increased the concern among Indian and South Asian professionals.

Who can apply?

The K Visa will be available to young professionals and researchers who have graduated or have higher degrees in STEM sectors from reputed universities or research institutes in China or abroad.  Young professionals whose teaching or research work is linked to a recognized institution can also apply.

Documents required to apply include educational certificates and proof of research or professional work. Chinese embassies and consulates will release a detailed list of documents in due course.

Features of the K Visa

  • This visa allows multiple entries, longer validity, and longer stays.
  • An invitation letter from a domestic employer or institution is not required for application.
  • Visa holders will be able to work in the fields of education, culture, science and technology, academic exchange, and business and entrepreneurship.

China's Comprehensive Strategy

The K visa is part of China's international openness and strategy to attract professionals. Over the years, China has relaxed the visa rules, increased visa-free entry, and implemented a long transit period.

According to official data, foreigners traveled 38.05 million for China in the first half of 2025, which is 30 percent more than the previous year.

Opportunities for South Asian Professionals

Following the new fees on H-1B visas in the US, many South Asian professionals are reconsidering their career options. The K visa offers them a simpler, less expensive, and less barrier-free option.

This initiative of China makes it clear that it is serious about attracting global STEM talents. Whether or not it can achieve a reputation like America or Europe, it is China's clearest and most direct proposal ever.
