New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing ceasefire and tense atmosphere between Iran and America, the Strait of Hormuz has once again become a center of global concern. The US has imposed strict surveillance and military blockade on ships passing through Iranian ports. Meanwhile, a shocking development has come to light – despite American sanctions, a Chinese tanker has succeeded in crossing this strategic sea route.
According to reports, shipping data has confirmed that the Chinese tanker 'Rich Starry' passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. This is the same ship on which America has banned doing business with Iran. Despite the ban, the safe passage of the ship is raising many questions.
According to data from LSEG, Marine Traffic and Kpler, 'Rich Starry' is the first ship to pass through this route after the blockade was imposed and managed to exit the bay. Earlier, many ships had changed their direction or stopped due to risk.
According to available information, it is a mid-sized tanker that was loaded with about 2.5 lakh barrels of methanol. The ship had a Chinese crew and was operated by Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Co Ltd, which is already subject to US sanctions.
Reports suggest that another banned tanker named ‘Murlikishan’ is also heading towards Hormuz. It is a 'Handysize' class ship, which is probably about to load fuel from Iraq. It has previously carried Russian and Iranian oil, making its movements more sensitive.
'Rich Starry' reached near Qeshm Island in Iran soon after the blockade was imposed but retreated for some time. Later it resumed its journey and eventually crossed Hormuz.
America has already made it clear that ships connected to Iranian ports can be targeted. In such a situation, the passing of this tanker not only challenges American strategy but also indicates further increase in tension in the region.
At present, this development may also have an impact on the ongoing peace talks amid a 15-day temporary ceasefire. The increasing unrest in Hormuz shows that the situation is not completely under control and the situation may become more sensitive in the coming days.
