Brazil: A fire broke out suddenly on Thursday afternoon in the main venue of the ongoing COP30 climate conference in Belem, Brazil. This fire broke out in the part that is called Blue Zone. This space has been created for all the important meetings, pavilions, media centers, and offices of high-level representatives.
Due to smoke, 13 people had to be given treatment on the spot. Doctors have declared his condition stable. Relief teams immediately provided first aid.
As soon as smoke was seen rising, people started running towards the exit doors. The UNFCCC Secretariat issued an announcement within minutes directing the evacuation of the entire complex. Thousands of people gathered outside in the open space.
India's Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav and his team were present in the Blue Zone at the same time. The ministry confirmed that all Indian delegates evacuated safely.
Antonio Guterres was in the compound at the same time. The security team took him out immediately. The fire brigade arrived and brought the fire under control in about six minutes.
According to the organizers, the Green Zone is completely safe. The exhibitions and stalls set up there were not affected. However, many events have had to be cancelled, which may impact the timeline of the conference.
The entire complex has been evacuated. After the fire, this place is no longer officially considered a “Blue Zone,” as its responsibility now lies with the local administration. The fire brigade is conducting safety checks, and further information will be shared later.
UN security agencies have begun counting staff and representatives. All organizations have confirmed that their staff are safe.
Heavy rain started within minutes after the fire broke out. Thousands of people who came out had to stand in the rain, due to which the situation became more difficult for some time.
