Washington: America's President Donald Trump has filed a defamation case against Britain's public broadcaster, BBC. Trump alleges that the BBC edited parts of his January 6, 2021, speech in such a way that it appeared that he had incited supporters to attack the US Capitol. Trump says that his statement was distorted.

What is Trump's allegation on BBC?

According to Trump, the BBC combined two parts of his speech, one in which he told supporters to march towards the Capitol and the other in which he said, “Fight like hell.” But that part was removed where Trump had appealed for peaceful demonstration. Trump claims that this editing made him appear responsible for the violence.

How much compensation has been demanded?

Trump has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Florida. He has alleged that the BBC not only committed defamation but also violated a law that prohibits misleading and inappropriate behavior. Trump is demanding total damages of 10 billion dollars in this case.

How has BBC responded to this?

BBC has already apologized for this documentary. The broadcaster has admitted that there was an editing error and it sent the wrong message that Trump directly called for violence. However, BBC says that this lawsuit is not legally sustainable, and their standstill remains the same.

When and how did this controversy start?

This case is related to a documentary clip shown in BBC's 'Panorama' program, which was broadcast before the 2024 US presidential election. Questions were also raised within BBC regarding this clip. An internal memo was leaked, in which concerns were raised about editing. Later, two senior BBC officials also resigned.

Was this documentary shown in America?

This BBC documentary was not broadcast in America. Despite this, Trump has filed a case in America, because in Britain there is a one-year time limit in defamation-related cases, which has expired in this case.

How difficult will the legal battle ahead be?

According to legal experts, in America, Trump will have to prove that BBC intentionally or negligently showed wrong information and this damaged his image. It can be argued on behalf of the BBC that the basic premise of the program was correct and it did not cause any new damage to Trump's image.

Trump's fight against the media does not end here

This is not the first time that Trump has sued media organizations. Earlier, he had also taken legal steps against big media houses like CBS, ABC, the New York Times, and Wall Street Journal. Settlement was reached in many cases, while some cases are still going on.
