Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again made a big claim regarding Iran. He said that if America had wanted, it could have targeted Iran's top leaders in a single attack during the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but this was not done intentionally because America wants to keep the path open for nuclear talks with Iran.
According to media reports, in a phone interview on Saturday, Trump said that America had the full capability to target Iran's top leaders. "We could have eliminated it all together, but we didn't do that because we didn't want to eliminate the opportunity for dialogue," he said.
Trump claims that America's priority is not only military action but also finding a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue with Iran.
Trump said that for now both sides have agreed to pause the talks for some time. He says that Iran is ready for an agreement and talks can resume soon.
He also reiterated that if the talks are successful then tensions in the region can be reduced and a way forward can be found between the two countries.
In the interview, Trump once again reiterated his old claim that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint operation between America and Israel at the beginning of the war. However, this claim has not yet been confirmed by any independent or official source.
Trump said that he was surprised to see the huge crowd gathered at the funeral of Ali Khamenei. According to him, he felt that the people of Iran were angry with Khamenei, but the arrival of lakhs of people for the last farewell was shocking for him.
He also said that it is possible that the tears of some people present there may not be genuine. However, there has been no official reaction from Iran on this comment.
This statement of Trump's has come at a time when discussions are intensifying regarding change of regime and regional security in Iran. On the other hand, continuous efforts are going on at the international level regarding nuclear talks and stability in West Asia. In such a situation, Trump's comments may spark a new debate on US-Iran relations and regional politics.
