Trump Asked Xi Jinping About Buying American Weapons During US Visit, Here’s What Happened

Washington: An interesting conversation has come to light during the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to US Ambassador to China David Perdue, during the meeting held at the White House, Trump asked Jinping whether China would like to buy arms from America. Perdue told this while talking to American media.

According to David Perdue, during the conversation between Trump and Jinping, the US President asked China about buying American weapons. The comment was reportedly made in a light-hearted manner. In the meeting, many important issues including trade, artificial intelligence and Taiwan were discussed between the two leaders.

Why was Taiwan mentioned?

According to Perdue, during the same conversation, Trump also mentioned US arms sales to Taiwan. The US has been providing arms to strengthen Taiwan's defence capability, while China has long opposed US arms sales. Even before the recent Trump-Jinping talks, US arms sales to Taiwan had been among the major contentious issues between the two countries.

Why was this question interesting for Jinping?

Amidst the strategic competition between America and China, the US President asking China about buying American weapons can be considered an unusual aspect of the conversation. However, according to Perdue, this was said in a light-hearted manner. Therefore, this cannot be seen as any proposal or agreement by China to buy American weapons.
