International News: US President Donald Trump no longer plans to visit India for the Quad summit later this year, The New York Times claimed on Saturday, detailing how the relationship between the American leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “deteriorated” over the past few months. In a report titled 'The Nobel Prize and a tense phone call: How Trump-Modi relations soured', NYT quoted people familiar with Trump's schedule as saying that "after telling Modi that he would visit India later this year for the Quad summit, Trump no longer plans to visit India." There has been no official comment from the US or India on this claim of NYT.

Trump’s Mediation Claim Sparks Tension

According to the report, relations between Trump and Modi started deteriorating when Trump repeatedly said that he had resolved the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan in May. India denied this claim and clarified that the ceasefire was only through direct talks between India and Pakistan, America had no role in it.

India has rejected Trump's claim of peace agreement

NYT has written that while returning from the G7 summit on June 17, Trump had a 35-minute phone conversation with Prime Minister Modi. During this, Trump again claimed that the credit for ending the military tension goes to him and even said that Pakistan is going to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The report said that its indirect implication was that Modi should also nominate Trump. On the other hand, India has repeatedly said that America had no role in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. India has also refused to accept Trump's intervention.

Modi Rejects Trump’s Nobel Proposal

The newspaper further wrote that Modi's rejection of this proposal and his refusal to discuss the issue of Nobel Prize deepened the rift in the relations between the two leaders. The White House also did not share any official information about the call on June 17, while Trump has repeated the claim more than 40 times on public forums since May 10 that he prevented the India-Pakistan conflict.

Fierce battle between India and America over tariff

The report also mentions that the Trump administration imposed an additional 25 percent duty on India for buying Russian oil. According to experts, this move was not just about Russia, but appears to be part of a strategy to specifically target India.

NYT also claimed that Trump, “frustrated with tariff talks”, tried to contact Modi several times, but the Indian Prime Minister did not respond to his requests. There is a fierce battle between India and the US over tariffs. After the US imposed tariffs, India has started looking for alternative markets.
