Washington: Pakistan's role as a mediator between the US-Iran is facing increasing scrutiny after failed talks. Iran has also clearly refused to trust Pakistan. Meanwhile, Pakistan appears to be stepping away from its role as a mediator. Both sides, US and Iran are currently engaging in telephone conversations.
According to reports, US President Donald Trump has stated that the America is now focusing on phone conversations with Iran rather than holding talks in Pakistan. Negotiations with Iran have improved significantly.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, lasting over 90 minutes. The Kremlin described the talks as friendly and productive. During the conversation, several global issues were discussed, including the conflict with Iran, the Ukraine dispute, and the recent shooting incident at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
Iranian MP Ebrahim Rezaei Babadi said that Pakistan has lost trust as a mediator and is bowing to the US. However, Ebrahim Rezaei Babadi also stated that while Pakistan is a good friend and neighbor, it is not a suitable mediator for negotiations due to a lack of trust.
Rezaei accused Pakistan of consistently supporting Donald Trump's interests and avoiding taking a firm stance against the United States.
Meanwhile, Trump has stated that he will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. "We have destroyed their navy, their air force, and their anti-aircraft systems."
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation on Wednesday evening. The two leaders reportedly discussed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital sea route for global energy supply and trade. During the conversation, Araghchi briefed Jaishankar on various aspects of the issue.
According to a statement from Iran's Foreign Ministry, both the countries discussed the latest developments related to the ceasefire, bilateral relations, and the regional and international situation. The leaders of the two countries discussed various aspects of the current situation and agreed to maintain mutual contact in the future.
