Big Blow to Trump Before Midterm Polls, Supreme Court Stops Changes to Mail Voting Rules

Before the midterm elections to be held in America, President Donald Trump has received a big setback from the Supreme Court. The court has put a stay on the plan of the Trump administration, under which the rules for voting by mail were to be changed. After this decision, now voters in all the states of America will get a chance to cast their vote according to the old process related to postal ballots.

Justice Samuel Alito and Justice Clarence Thomas disagreed on this order of the Supreme Court. Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that these restrictions should not be implemented at present. However, he indicated that a decision may come in favour of the Trump administration in the future.

What did the Trump administration demand from the Supreme Court?

The Trump administration had appealed to the Supreme Court to allow it to implement new rules regarding mail ballots before the midterm elections for control of Congress. The administration argued that it was necessary to implement these rules to bring uniformity in the election process.

This matter is also important because a large number of voters in America vote through post. In such a situation, any change in the rules related to postal ballots can have a huge impact on the election process.

Why were questions raised regarding the new rules?

Under the plan of the Trump administration, it was said that all the states would adopt the same format for envelopes for postal ballots. Apart from this, it was also made mandatory to submit the list of eligible voters on an online portal.

Ballots from states that did not follow the rules could be prevented from being accepted by the Postal Service. For this reason, election officials and other parties had expressed concern about this system.

Was there a danger of millions of postal ballots being rejected?

Election officials said it would be practically difficult to make such a major change to the entire voting system just weeks before the midterm elections. States like Alabama, North Carolina and Wisconsin had already begun sending mail ballots despite the new systems not being activated.

Questions were also raised about the new system in a disinformation report. According to the report, the online portal was not properly prepared and there was a risk of the entire batch of ballot papers being rejected due to a small barcode error.

Democratic Party state officials and civil rights groups had challenged the Trump administration's plan in court. His argument was that the President does not have the constitutional right to impose such new rules before the elections. This may affect the process of postal voting.
