Bangladesh: Massive Fire Breaks Out At Dhaka Airport's cargo terminal, Flights Suspended

Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Kawser Mahmud stated that teams from the airport’s fire department, the Bangladesh Air Force fire unit, and other relevant agencies swiftly reached the scene and launched a coordinated operation to contain the blaze.

International News: A fire broke out at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, prompting the temporary suspension of all flights. The fire started in the airport’s cargo area, producing thick smoke that could be seen from a distance and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Fire Sparks Immediate Response

Officials reported that the fire began near Gate 8 at around 2:30 pm. Talha Bin Jashim, a spokesperson for the Fire Service, said that nine firefighting units were sent immediately, with fifteen more on the way. Later, Talha Bin Jashim from the Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell confirmed that 28 units were actively working to control the fire, while backup units remained ready. An airport spokesperson assured that “all our aircraft are safe. Further updates will follow as the situation develops.”

Coordinated Efforts to Control the Blaze

The firefighting effort is a joint operation involving the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority, the Fire Service, and two fire units from the Bangladesh Air Force, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Additionally, two platoons from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) joined the rescue operations. The Bangladesh Navy is also reportedly assisting to ensure safety in and around the airport, Bangladeshi media outlet Prothomalo reported.

No Casualties Reported

Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate casualties or major damages from the fire. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, and officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further risks.
