New Delhi: In France, there have been reports of violence and looting in connection with the movement of students and trade unions to protest against inflation, rising costs of living and government cuts. According to information provided, demonstrations took place in several cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille. Incidents of damage to shops, public buildings and vehicles have also been reported at some places.

How did the movement become so widespread?

Initially the demands raised regarding education, employment conditions and government policies gradually became linked to protests against inflation and cuts in public services. Participation of labour organisations, trade unions, farmers and pensioners along with students and teachers has been claimed. The main demands of the people associated with the movement include reducing the cost of living, increasing the budget for education, improving teachers' salaries and security of the pension system. A section of protesters are also demanding withdrawal of proposed cuts in public services.

In which cities were shops and government buildings targeted?

According to French media reports, several shops were vandalised and looted in Bordeaux. A municipal building was targeted in Marseille, while incidents of arson were also reported in Lyon. A fire at the historic town hall in Limoges caused extensive damage to the building. According to officials, at many places different groups resorted to violence after the peaceful protests ended. Common people, shopkeepers and public property suffered losses due to these incidents.

Which shops were damaged in looting and arson?

There were reports of shops being targeted in many cities including Bordeaux. At some places, masked people broke glass windows of business establishments and looted goods. Reports mention damage to showrooms of luxury brands as well as other retail outlets. However, complete details of the damage caused to each shop and the items looted have not been revealed yet. Differentiating between people involved in violence and peaceful protesters is also an important part of the investigation.

What did the government say and how many people were arrested?

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on October 17, based on preliminary government data, that about 5.5 lakh people demonstrated across the country and about 400 people were detained. Protest organisers put the number of participants at around eight lakh. President Emmanuel Macron said action would be taken against those who attacked shops, government buildings and other property. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu also condemned the arson and looting, distinguishing between the right to peaceful protest and violence.

What steps did the police take to stop the violence?

Anti-riot police in Paris and other cities used tear gas and water cannons to control protesters. There were clashes between police and groups involved in violence at several places. Security forces increased surveillance around government buildings and commercial areas. At the same time, investigation has also been started in the case of serious injury to the hand of a young protestor during the police action. This incident has raised questions about the equipment used to maintain law and order and their effectiveness.
