Washington: An American fighter pilot who went missing in Iran has been rescued. US President Donald Trump confirmed this development on Sunday. He stated that while the pilot is injured, he is expected to make a full recovery. Donald Trump also noted that the pilot had taken refuge in the rugged, mountainous terrain of Iran.
According to the US President, the rescue operation involved dozens of aircraft; the US maintained constant surveillance on the pilot's location around the clock while meticulously planning his extraction. However, Iran claims that the American rescue mission failed and that two Black Hawk helicopters and a C-130 support aircraft were shot down. Let us take a closer look at how the American rescue operation unfolded in Iran...
Immediately after the US F-15E fighter jet crashed on Friday, the United States launched a high-level search and rescue operation. Meanwhile, Iran placed a bounty on the "enemy pilot." It was announced that anyone who captured and handed over the American pilot would be rewarded. This marks the first instance during the ongoing conflict in which Iran has successfully shot down an American aircraft. Prior to this incident, three F-15s were lost due to "friendly fire" within Kuwait's air defense zone.
According to reports, both F-15 pilots—along with the Weapons Systems Officer—managed to establish contact via their communication systems shortly after ejecting from the aircraft. According to 'The New York Times', the officers had taken cover within a mountainous area. For a considerable period, even American forces were unable to locate them. Concurrently, Iran was also making no headway in its efforts to find them. According to a senior official, prior to pinpointing the location of the Weapons Systems Officer, the CIA executed a deception operation. It deliberately disseminated false intelligence within Iran, suggesting that the U.S. military had already located the missing pilots and was in the process of attempting to extract them.
At that precise moment, the U.S. intelligence agency utilized specialized capabilities to pinpoint their exact location. The official confirmed that the CIA subsequently relayed this critical intelligence regarding the American personnel to the Pentagon, the U.S. military, and the White House. Following this, Trump immediately ordered the launch of a rescue mission. The F-15E fighter jet was downed in a region of Iran where there is significant opposition to the Iranian government. Consequently, it was believed that the American pilot might receive assistance and shelter from local residents in the area.
Officials told the US news website Axios that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also deployed forces to the region in an attempt to thwart the rescue operation. Furthermore, Iranian military forces launched attacks on U.S. Air Force aircraft to prevent them from reaching the site. However, according to a senior military official, all commandos and weapons officers returned safely. Subsequently, the rescue aircraft transported the injured airman to Kuwait for medical treatment.
