Pakistan: The kind of treatment meted out to the supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Pakistan has once again increased the tension in the country's politics. The situation worsened outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi late on Tuesday night when police used water cannons on peaceful protestors. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) alleges that chemicals were mixed in this water.
Imran Khan is currently lodged in Adiala jail. According to the order of the Islamabad High Court, he is allowed to meet twice a week. But PTI says that the administration is not consistently following this order. In protest against this, Imran's sisters, party leaders, and a large number of supporters had gathered outside the jail. They said that they only want a meeting as per the court order and not any conflict.
PTI claims that despite the extreme cold, the police fired water cannons, and water was released in torrents on the protesters. The party alleges that this water contained chemical elements, which caused problems for many people. Women and the elderly were also not spared. After the video of this entire incident surfaced, the anger among the supporters has increased further.
Imran Khan's sister Alima Khan said that Pakistan is going through a very difficult phase at this time. According to her, the independence of the judiciary is weakening, unemployment is increasing, and the security situation of the country is also worrying. She raised the question that if the government is talking about political talks, then why is the family not being told on what issue the talks took place?
PTI has directly accused the government and police that despite clear orders of the court, Imran Khan's sisters and lawyers were not allowed to meet him. The party says that all the people had reached the jail as per the fixed list, but still the administration stopped the meeting. After this, when the supporters protested, force was used on them. Some people were also detained.
After this incident, PTI has clearly said that this action is not an example of law and order but an example of repression. The party has warned that if peaceful voices continue to be suppressed like this, the protests will intensify. Imran Khan's supporters say that they are demanding a constitution, democracy, and rule of law, and their struggle for this will continue.
