New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit India from July 1 to 3. This will be the first India-Japan Annual Summit since March 2022. This will also be a Takaichi's first trip to India since taking office. As per the diplomatic sources, the visit will focus on strengthening ties across strategic, economic and technological areas.

What will happen during the visit?

PM Modi will hold summit-level talks with Takaichi over the three days. Both leaders will be witnessing the exchange of several Memorandums of Cooperation and Understandings. They will also take part in the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum. In which government officials and business leaders from both countries will discuss the ways to expand investment and trade partnerships.

What the background of India-Japan ties?

India and Japan expanded their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership back in 2014. Last August, PM Modi's visit to Japan set a roadmap for cooperation over the next decade. It was mainly focused on defense, security, trade, investment, innovation, technology and people-to-people exchanges. Japan considers India as a key partner in advancing its updated Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision. Takaichi has been pushing such MoUs since taking the office. Both sides are likely to reaffirm their commitment to a rules-based international order and regional stability.

Are the semiconductors and critical minerals on the table?

Economic cooperation is expected to dominate much of the summit discussions. Both countries will look at building stronger and more resilient supply chains in semiconductors and critical minerals. The goal is to reduce dependency risks and boost economic security on both sides. Greater investment and innovation to support long-term growth will also be discussed.

What about maritime security and Indo-Pacific cooperation?

The summit is also expected to link Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision with India's MAHASAGAR initiative. Talks are likely to cover maritime security, defense technology collaboration and building an industrial value chain connecting the Bay of Bengal region with India's northeast.

What outcomes are expected?

Joint declarations on economic security and artificial intelligence cooperation are expected to come out of this summit. Progress on a large green ammonia project in Odisha is also likely to be announced. Cooperation in the biogas sector is expected to expand, alongside the POWERR Asia initiative aimed at regional resilience.

Which agreements to be signed?

The visit is expected to end with a Joint Statement on the Annual Summit along with declarations on energy resilience. Around a dozen Memorandums of Cooperation are likely to be signed covering artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, battery technology and critical minerals. There are nearly 120 private sector agreements as well, that are expected to be showcased during the visit. This will be reflecting the growing business ties between the two countries.
