New Delhi: The Indian government has issued a new advisory for its citizens in view of the increasing security risks, political turmoil and unrest in Iran. The Indian Embassy in Tehran said in an updated advisory that all Indians present in Iran should try to "leave the country as soon as possible by available means". This includes commercial flights, road routes and other travel options to ensure their safety. The purpose of this advisory is to provide safe evacuation of Indian citizens amidst the current changing situation and serious concern.
The Indian Government advisory clearly states that all Indians living in Iran, including students, pilgrims, business people and tourists, are advised to leave Iran as soon as possible using available means of transport. The embassy also said that citizens should maintain distance from areas of protest or unrest and remain alert to avoid any untoward incident.
Protests and social tensions have been increasing continuously in Iran for the last few weeks. According to local media reports and international monitoring, violence and protests have spread across several parts of the country, resulting in several deaths and mass arrests. In view of the ups and downs in the country's security system, India has taken this step so that the security of its citizens can be given priority.
The advisory also states that Indians should avoid unnecessary travel to Iran for now. Pending new orders, the Government of India has advised that no citizen should travel to Iran, especially as the security situation there remains uncertain and volatile.
The Embassy has also issued emergency helpline numbers and email IDs through which Indian citizens can seek immediate assistance if needed. Also, all Indians have been requested to register with the Embassy so that it is easy to contact them in case of emergency.
Is this the first advice?
This is not the first time that India has issued an advisory for its citizens in Iran. Earlier also, amid security concerns, an advisory was given on January 5 in which Indians were asked to postpone travel and remain alert. Reiterating that advice, it has been issued in a more strict form in the new advisory.
The security situation in Iran appears weak amid local violence, protests and political tension. In such a situation, many countries have also advised their citizens to leave areas where there is instability. This advice from India is part of this comprehensive security approach.
The Government of India has underlined that all Indian citizens should give top priority to their security and prepare to exit Iran by adopting safe alternatives before any instability or violence.
