New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani became the mayor of New York City after midnight Thursday. He took oath of office at a historic, decommissioned subway station in Manhattan. Soon after swearing-in, addressing a public meeting in as New York Mayor, Zohran Mamdani said, “Happy New Year to New Yorkers. This moment is truly an honour and a privilege of a lifetime...”

Notably, Mamdani was sworn in as the first Muslim leader of America's biggest city. He took oath by placing his hand on a Quran. After taking oath, Mamdani said, "This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime."

The oath taking ceremony of the democrat was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a political ally. The ceremony was held at the old City Hall station. Notably, Mamdani’s elevation marks several firsts in the city’s long history. He is the first mayor of South Asian descent, the first born in Africa, and, at the age of 34, he became the youngest mayor in generations.

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani is born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991. He is son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar-activist Mahmood Mamdani. Interestingly, Mamdani is city's first Muslim mayor. He is also New York City youngest mayor in generations.
