International News: After the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, it was announced by the Government of India to cancel the Indus Water Agreement by taking a tough stand against Pakistan. The impact of this strategic move is now clearly seen in the ground reality of Pakistan. The water crisis in Pakistan is getting deeper, and its biggest impact is on the farmers of Punjab province. According to the recent report of the Government of Pakistan, the water from the Indus River system has declined by an average of 13.3% annually. According to data from Pakistan's Indus River System Authority (IRSA), only 1.24 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Indus Basin on 5 June 2025, while the figure was 1.44 lakh cusecs on the same date last year.

Kharif season in crisis, farmers disappointed

Experts believe that this deficiency of water in the Indus basin is going to have a direct impact on the sowing of kharif crops. Prior to the rains, crops in the fields may be in the grip of drought, due to which there is a possibility of heavy yield loss. However, some expectations rest on monsoon rains.

Decreased level of reservoirs became a matter of concern

Former Chairman of the Central Water Commission of India, A.K. Bajaj, said in a conversation with a channel, "The water level in Pakistan's reservoirs has fallen worryingly, especially in areas associated with the Indus River system." He also clarified that "India's decision to reconsider the Indus Water Treaty has brought Pakistan under pressure."

Impact of India's strictness: Pakistan deepened crisis

It is becoming clear that after the change in India's water policy, Pakistan is suffering heavy losses on both diplomatic and geographical levels. This situation of water crisis is a big warning for Pakistan, which has been giving protection to anti-India activities for a long time.

There may be more serious water crisis in the coming months

Experts believe that if this situation persists, Pakistan may face a more serious water crisis in the coming months. Many serious consequences, such as a steep decline in agricultural production, lack of drinking water in rural areas, and obstruction of power generation, can result in many serious consequences. India's decision to control the Indus water flow is also considered a diplomatic message on the international platform, which shows that India will no longer compromise its security and interests. It is now considered an important step towards using water as a strategic weapon.
