New Delhi: Iran is currently going through one of its most difficult times. Inflation is at record levels, the local currency is continuously weakening, and the savings of common people are decreasing daily. People have come out on the streets in many cities of the country against this situation. It started with small protests, but now this movement has spread on a large scale.
The government is showing strictness, the internet is closed, and the rhetoric has increased even at the international level. The situation is not limited to Iran only, but the language of direct confrontation has started being heard from Washington to Tehran.
Goods are expensive in shops. Jobs are decreasing. The youth do not have work. Even rent and medicines have become a burden for many families. People say that the government is not listening to them. This resentment gradually turned into protest.
US-based human rights organizations claim that at least 62 people have died so far. More than 2300 people have been detained. Many injured are admitted to hospitals. Some reports also suggest more deaths than this.
Some international reports and statements of doctors suggest that there has been direct firing at many places. A doctor was quoted as saying that more than 200 bodies were brought to just six hospitals. The government is not confirming this openly.
On government TV channels they are being called “rioters,” “saboteurs,” and “terrorists.” Experts believe that this is an attempt to justify strict action.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the US president's "hands are stained with the blood of Iranians." He made this statement in the context of the recent war and America's support. During the speech his supporters also raised slogans of “Death to America”.
Khamenei said that his country will not bow under pressure. He also hinted that Trump's fate could be similar to that of the Shah of Iran in 1979, who had to flee power.
Donald Trump described Iran as “a country in great trouble.” He warned that America would also respond if the government continued to open fire on people. He said the attack would not be on the ground but "will be hit where it hurts most."
Trump said in an interview that 86-year-old Khamenei was probably preparing to leave the country. However, no official statement has come from Tehran on this.
The government has stopped communication services. Human rights organizations say that its purpose is to hide the truth from the outside world. According to a Norway-based organization, at least nine children were among the dead.
India has said that it is monitoring the situation. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, about 10 thousand Indians and people of Indian origin live in Iran. An advisory has been issued regarding their safety.
Experts say it could be bigger than the demonstrations following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Many people consider this the most serious challenge to power since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
