Washington: America has issued a strict warning to its citizens amid the ongoing violent protests in Iran. The US Virtual Embassy present in Iran has said that American citizens should prepare to leave the country without delay. According to the Embassy, the situation is deteriorating rapidly and the safety of the common people as well as foreign citizens is in danger.

Are demonstrations no longer limited to just protests?

America says that demonstrations have turned violent in many parts of the country. Clashes are taking place on the streets, large numbers of people are being detained and many are also getting injured. In such an environment, it is becoming difficult for people coming from outside to stay safe.

Are phones and internet also not working properly?

It has been told in the advisory that the Government of Iran has imposed restrictions on mobile networks, landlines and national internet service at many places. In many cities the internet is completely shut or is running very slowly. Due to this, people are also facing difficulty in contacting their families and the embassy.

Wasn't even getting off the flight easy?

The disturbed situation has also affected air services. Many international airlines have reduced or temporarily canceled their flights to Iran. Some companies have decided to keep their services closed till January 16, due to which the problems of passengers have increased further.

Then what is the way out?

The US has advised its citizens to try to leave Iran via Armenia or Turkey if circumstances permit. It has also been said that interruptions in internet and phone services may continue, hence make alternative arrangements in advance.

Why did these protests start?

This movement started in Iran on 28 December against inflation and rising prices. Gradually this turned into large and violent demonstrations against the government and religious leadership. According to human rights agencies, 544 people have died so far and more than 10,681 people have been arrested. The situation does not seem to be calming down yet.
