New Delhi: Israel and America jointly attacked Iran's capital Tehran on Saturday. Its objective is said to be to maintain the security of the country. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed that the attack was launched to "eliminate security threats", after which explosions were heard in areas including Tehran and plumes of smoke were seen in the sky. Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency and air raid sirens were sounded in anticipation of possible retaliatory attacks.

Why did Israel and America launch the attack?

A statement issued by the Israeli Defense Minister said that the operation was carried out to “prevent possible threats emanating from Iran”. According to Israel's military interpretation, it was necessary to weaken Iran's missile capability and military preparedness in advance so that Israel itself could remain safe before any major attack. This attack has been called a “pre-emptive strike”, which means taking action before the beginning of hostilities.

What was the situation in Tehran?

Local media and witnesses reported that smoke and noise were seen at the time of several explosions in central areas of Tehran. Iranian government channels also confirmed the explosions, although details or the number of casualties have not yet been revealed. Citizens in many parts suddenly heard loud noises and came out of buildings for safety.

What alert was issued in Israel?

Air raid sirens were sounded in many parts of Israel immediately after the attack, intended to protect civilians from possible Iranian missile or drone retaliatory attacks. Sirens sounded in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and security agencies instructed citizens to stay in safe places. Along with this, Israel closed its airspace and canceled public events.

Can this conflict escalate?

Analysts say that if there is retaliatory action from Iran, it will not just be a bilateral clash, but it could increase the possibility of a wide-scale conflict. Tensions have flared up between the two countries before, and this new attack and retaliation could impact many war- and peace efforts based in the Middle East. At present the situation is developing and the eyes of the world are focused on this conflict.
