Israel: After the recent fighting between Israel and Lebanon, ceasefire has been implemented, but peace has not yet fully returned on the ground. Meanwhile, the Israeli Army on Sunday released a new map of the areas under its occupation in Southern Lebanon.
The map shows a line called the "Forward Defense Line" or "Yellow Line", which extends inland from the border and covers dozens of villages. Most of these villages have already been vacated. The army says this map has been released to clarify the security arrangements where its five divisions and navy personnel are deployed and where surveillance is going on.
Actually, releasing this map seems to be part of Israel's strategy in which it is trying to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The army and the defense minister have clearly stated that villages near the border, which could have been used for Hezbollah, are being destroyed on the Gaza model. He argues that this is necessary for the security of North Israel.
Despite the ceasefire, traces of devastation are still clearly visible in many areas of southern Lebanon. Rubble of houses, broken roads and lack of basic facilities. People are slowly trying to return, but Israel has prohibited them from going south of the Litani River. Israeli soldiers are still present at many places and operations are ongoing.
There has been no official reaction yet from Lebanon, nor from Hezbollah. But local people and some analysts are saying this is against the spirit of ceasefire. He says that the presence of soldiers so deep inside another country and the demolition of villages can rekindle tensions.
Israel's stand is clear; its forces will remain there until they are confident that the Hezbollah threat has been completely eliminated. Prime Minister Netanyahu himself has said, "We are there and we are not leaving."
Experts are saying that if no concrete agreement is reached on this issue from both sides, then this 10-day ceasefire may prove to be just a break. There is peace now, but the tension is clearly felt in the air.
Overall, this map is not just a picture. This shows that the war may have stopped, but the game on the border still remains quite delicate and complex. It remains to be seen how much will be resolved through talks in the coming days.
