Earthquake in Japan: The National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Japan late Saturday night. The centre reported that the quake had a depth of 50 km and occurred at 8:51 pm.
Japan is located in a very active seismic region across the country. Many earthquakes can be recorded due to the world's most dense seismic network here. Japan is also in a volcanic region, causing repeated shocks and sometimes volcanic activity in the islands.
There have been many major earthquakes in Japan earlier, including the 2024 Noto earthquakes, the 2011 Tohoku earthquakes and tsunamis, the 2004 Chuetsu earthquakes and the great Hanshin earthquake of 1995.
Earthquakes in Japan are measured by seismic intensity rather than the Richter scale. This scale measures the intensity of earthquake tremors at a particular place. The Shindo scale contains levels from 0 to 7.
