Washington: At least 16 files related to Jeffrey Epstein suddenly disappeared from the public website of the US Justice Department. These files were uploaded on Friday but were removed from the website within 24 hours by Saturday. Jeffrey Epstein was a notorious financier who was convicted of sex crimes and later died.
The missing files also included a photograph in which US President Donald Trump, his wife Melania Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell were seen together. The photo was visible among several photo frames and photographs kept in furniture and drawers. Apart from this, some files also contained photographs of paintings of naked women.
Till now the US Justice Department has not clarified whether these files were removed intentionally or by mistake. There has been no official statement from the department on this matter. When asked questions, the spokesperson of the department also did not give any answer.
The sudden removal of these documents gave rise to many speculations on social media. Democratic lawmakers in the House Oversight Committee of the US Parliament mentioned the disappearance of Trump's photo on social media platform X and raised the question, "What else is being hidden?" He demanded transparency for the American public.
Thousands of Epstein-related documents released recently included many big names, including former President Bill Clinton. But Donald Trump's name was almost missing in these written records. It is also in the news because Trump's name has appeared in previously released documents, such as the flight logs of Epstein's private jet. Trump has always denied any connection to Epstein's crimes.
The documents that were most awaited have still not been released. These include FBI interviews with victims and internal Justice Department reports explaining why Epstein was not charged with serious charges at the federal level. The absence of these files has once again raised questions.
Epstein was granted immunity in the 2000s under a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to only a minor state crime, avoiding federal sex trafficking charges. Now, due to the disappearance of these documents, questions are being raised again on the investigation and prosecution process of that time.
Many of the files released were either completely blacked out or lacked essential information. A 119-page document was completely blacked out. The Justice Department says millions of pages still remain to be investigated, and it will take time to hide the identities of the victims. But the MPs suffering from this delay and demanding transparency are quite angry.
Despite the deadline set by Congress, the Justice Department now says the documents will be released in a phased manner. It is clear from this that it may take a long time for the complete picture of the failure of the entire network and system related to Epstein to emerge.
