Madrid: Spain has closed its airspace to US aircraft involved in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Defence Minister Margarita Robles stated on Monday that Spain had conveyed a clear message to the US military: its military bases could not be utilized for any operations related to the conflict in the Middle East. This same restriction has now been extended to its airspace as well. Previously, Spain had already refused to allow the use of the Rota and Morón military bases for Iran-related operations.
Spain has been the most vocal European government in its criticism of the Middle East policies pursued by the United States and Israel. Defense Minister Robles remarked, "This decision was communicated to the U.S. military forces right from the outset. Therefore, neither is the use of the bases permitted, nor is the use of Spanish airspace." She characterized the conflict with Iran as both illegal and unjust. Spain maintains that these actions by the U.S. and Israel constitute a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares had previously stated that Spanish bases could only be utilized for activities falling within the scope of bilateral agreements and the United Nations framework. Following this decision, approximately 15 military aircraft—including US KC-135 tanker planes—departed from their bases in southern Spain and relocated to Germany and other locations. According to flight tracking websites, these aircraft had been serving a refueling role for strikes targeting Iran. This firm stance taken by Spain has heightened tensions with its NATO ally, the United States.
US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose trade sanctions on Spain; however, the Spanish government remains steadfast in its position. Prime Minister Sánchez described the conflict as an unjustified and dangerous military intervention. He asserted that Spain would not, in any form, become a partner in this conflict. Spain's actions are being viewed as the most unequivocal expression of opposition within Europe to the US policy regarding Iran. The government maintains that the bases fall under Spanish sovereignty and may only be utilized in strict accordance with international law.
