New Delhi: India has strongly condemned an attack on a vessel flying its flag off the coast of Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that targeting commercial vessels and ordinary seafarers is completely unacceptable. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “The attack on the Indian vessel near Oman yesterday is unacceptable. We condemn the fact that commercial vessels and innocent seafarers are repeatedly being made victims of attacks.” The government clarified that all Indian personnel on board the vessel are safe.

What did MEA statement say?

The government confirmed that all Indian seafarers on board the vessel are completely safe. The MEA thanked the Omani authorities, stating, “All Indian personnel are safe. We express our gratitude to the Omani authorities for their rescue efforts.” This incident has occurred at a time when regional tensions are escalating.

India has once again appealed to the international community to ensure the security of maritime trade routes. The statement noted, “Targeting commercial shipping, endangering innocent civilian seafarers, or disrupting freedom of navigation and commerce must be strictly avoided.” India clarified that it remains committed to enhancing international cooperation on maritime security and ensuring strict adherence to international maritime laws.

India is a major global trading nation, with approximately 95 percent of its trade conducted via maritime routes. The transportation of petroleum, chemicals, food products, and other essential commodities relies on these routes. Consequently, any disruption in this regard impacts not only the Indian economy but also the global economy.

The Ministry of External Affairs appealed to all parties involved in this incident to exercise restraint and respect international laws. According to sources, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have also stepped up surveillance in the region. A detailed investigation into the identity of the vessel and the nature of the attack is currently underway. Meanwhile, all Indian vessels have been advised to remain vigilant and adhere to necessary security protocols.

What is the Regional Conflict Situation?

Since February 28, 2026—following the commencement of an aerial campaign against Iran by the United States and Israel, as well as the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—the conflict in the region has reached a critical intensity. In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued warnings to vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and has carried out attacks on several merchant ships.

What Were Previous Attacks on Indians?

Indian sailors have been targeted in this crisis on previous occasions as well. On March 1, 2026, two Indian crew members were killed and three others injured in a projectile attack on the oil tanker 'Skylight,' located north of Khasab, Oman. Furthermore, an Indian sailor lost his life in a drone boat attack on a vessel named 'MKD VYOM,' while another Indian national sustained critical injuries aboard the ship 'Ayeh.'
