Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on Thursday a two percent hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees and teachers. He delivered this benefit just days after assuming office as Chief Minister. According to an official statement, with this revision, the Dearness Allowance (DA) will rise from 58 percent to 60 percent. This increase will be effective from January 1, 2026.
The hike in the Dearness Allowance will entail an additional annual expenditure of ₹1,230 crore for the state government. The statement noted that the government would allocate the necessary additional funds, thereby demonstrating its commitment to the welfare of government officials, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners. It further stated that Vijay has pledged to take steps to formulate and implement various welfare schemes for the people.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay also announced that the May installment of the 'Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai' scheme would soon be disbursed to women beneficiaries. Under this scheme, women receive a financial assistance of ₹1,000. The scheme was launched by the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government and is named after the party's veteran leader, M. Karunanidhi.
A government statement, citing Vijay, stated that the amount would be deposited directly into the beneficiaries' bank accounts. It noted, "The government requires time to restructure the 'Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai' scheme, under which women are provided with ₹1,000. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has issued directives ensuring that the May installment of ₹1,000 under this scheme is deposited directly into the beneficiaries' bank accounts without delay." Prior to the state assembly elections, Vijay's party, the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), had promised to provide a monthly assistance of ₹2,500 to women under the age of 60.
