Washington: US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran's new leadership wants to talk to him. Trump also said that he is also ready to talk to Iranian leaders. Trump made this statement following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli attack on Saturday. Several other top Iranian officials were also killed, including former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Abdul Rahim Mousavi.
According to an interview with The Atlantic Magazine, Trump said on Sunday that Iran's new leadership wants to talk to him and he has agreed. In an interview from his home in Florida, Trump said, "They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will talk to them. They should have done this earlier. They should have given them something that was very practical and easy. They delayed too long." Trump did not say who he would speak to or whether it would be on Sunday or Monday.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a leadership council, consisting of himself, the head of the judiciary, and a member of the powerful Guardians Council, has temporarily assumed the duties of the Supreme Leader.
Trump said that some of the people involved in recent negotiations with the US are no longer alive. In an interview with Atlantic staff writer Michael Sherer, he said, "Most of them are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone, because that was a big—that was a big hit." "They should have done it earlier, Michael. They could have made a deal. They should have done it earlier. They were very smart."
