Bangladesh Politics: Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has warned of resignation due to lack of political support. This warning came at a time when the BNP staged a widespread protest on Thursday, and Army Chief General Waqar-Uz-Zaman gave a clear message to the government, taking a tough stance. According to government sources and messages on social media, preparations are being made for a big demonstration towards Dhaka Cantonment and Bangladesh Secretariat after the prayers of Jumme.
Yunus's threat to resign is seen as a strategy to pressure Army Chief General Zam in the eyes of many experts. It is believed that Yunus wants to create public opinion against the army with the support of students and Islamic forces. He has been postponing the election date till now, which has increased restlessness among political parties. BNP fears that NCP, considered 'Raja's party,' may come to power due to delay.
According to NCP convenor Nahid Islam, Younus said, "I have been taken hostage ... I cannot work in this situation. Can not all political parties create mutual consent?" In a conversation with BBC Bangla, he said that Younus is feeling unable to work further in the current situation. Several advisors, including Cabinet members Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmood, tried to convince him to prevent his intention. An advisor told AFP, "He wanted to resign, but we stopped them."
The BNP has demanded the resignation of two other members of the NSA and Younus cabinet along with the demand for nomination for the post of Dhaka South City Mayor. The party says that the clarity of the electoral roadmap is its biggest priority. At the same time, Army Chief General Zaman has strictly said that if elections are not held by December, the army will take a tough stance. He warned, "Violence and anarchy in the name of mass movement will no longer be tolerated."
On Thursday evening, videos of torch processions taken out on the streets of Dhaka are becoming increasingly viral on social media. In some social media posts, people have been appealed to to stay away from the movement on Friday, and it has been said that Younus now has 'limited time' left. Analysts feared that Yunus might declare the 1972 constitution and declare a new republic and try to keep power in their hands by removing General Zaman.
