Pakistan: Strong tremors of an earthquake were felt across several parts of Pakistan early this morning, causing widespread panic among residents. The earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, prompting many people to rush out of their homes in fear. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to property so far.

Earthquake Struck at 3:54 AM, Epicenter 150 KM Deep

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 3:54 AM today, with its epicenter located at a depth of approximately 150 kilometers beneath Pakistan's surface. The intensity was strong enough to awaken people from their sleep, especially in northwestern regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan, where the tremors were most prominently felt.

Pakistan: A Seismically Sensitive Nation

Pakistan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world due to its geographic location at the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Areas such as Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are situated along the southern boundary of the Eurasian Plate. Meanwhile, Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir rest on the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate.

The collision between these plates frequently results in earthquakes, some of which can be highly destructive.

A History Marked by Destructive Earthquakes

Pakistan’s history with earthquakes has been devastating. In 2005, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Muzaffarabad, resulting in the deaths of nearly 87,000 people. Likewise, in 2007, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Balochistan, resulting in the loss of 825 lives. These tragic events underscore the constant seismic threat the country faces and the crucial role of preparedness and early warning systems.

What to Do and Avoid During an Earthquake

To stay safe during an earthquake, it is important to follow these precautions:

  • Take cover under a sturdy table or desk
  • Stay away from walls, windows, and electrical wires
  • Avoid using elevators during tremors
  • If you are outdoors, move to an open area, away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • Do not spread or believe in rumors—rely only on official information

Vigilance is Key to Safety

While today's earthquake did not cause major damage, it serves as a crucial reminder that seismic zones like Pakistan are always at risk. The government must continue to invest in disaster preparedness and raise public awareness to ensure that citizens are well-informed and protected in the event of future quakes.
