Melbourne: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), one of the world's most historic cricket grounds, during his visit to Australia. He was accompanied on this special visit by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Australian men's cricket team captain Steve Waugh.

What happen during the visit?

During this visit, a landmark decision was made to enhance sports cooperation between the two countries. In December of this year, the opening match of Australia 's popular T20 league, the Big Bash League (BBL), will be held in Chennai. This will be the first time in history that a foreign cricket league will play its matches on Indian soil.

The event will be the highlight of the week-long 'G-Day Namaste' celebrations to be held across India in December, showcasing various events across Australian culture, business and sport.

What did PM Modi say?

During his address, PM Modi, referring to the historicity of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the love for cricket between the two countries, said, "Coming to the MCG brings two emotions together in the heart of any Indian. One is the thrill of the India-Australia match, and the second is the realization that cricket is not just a sport in both countries, but a shared passion."

The PM further said in a lighter tone, "But today there is no pressure of 'last over finish' here. Today there is only the joy of the game, the warmth of our friendship and the energy of future champions."

PM Modi, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, launched the 'India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap'. He said that under this, we will strengthen cooperation in cricket as well as other sports. Expressing happiness over this, the PM said, "Sports is a strong link in the relations between India and Australia. Along with on-field partnership, we will also strengthen off-field partnership. Now we will also move forward together in the field of sports training, sports science and technology. Under this roadmap, cooperation will be strengthened in other sports as well as cricket."

"India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. We are also striving to host the Olympics in India in 2036. Brisbane will host the Olympics in 2032. Sports infrastructure will be developed on a mega scale to host these global events... I am delighted that a Big Bash League match will be held in Chennai, India. For any sporting league, hosting an event in India guarantees extensive reach and viewership," PM Modi said.

Did PM Modi meet young cricketers?

Upon arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, PM Modi received a warm welcome. He met the young cricketers present on the field. He encouraged them to play the game and, with a smile, autographed their jerseys.

Another special moment from this visit was when PM Modi met Australia's international mascot, "Ruby the Roo." In the presence of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Steve Waugh, PM Modi had a long and playful conversation with the mascot.

Given the deep cricketing ties between India and Australia, this meeting between the two Prime Ministers is considered extremely important, testifying to the strengthening of relations between the two countries not only at the diplomatic level but also at the cultural and sporting level.
