New Delhi: Amid the escalating conflict in gulf, India could play a important role in easing tensions in the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. According to a geopolitical expert, Prime Minister Narendra Modi could play a decisive role, even as questions mount over Pakistan’s credibility as a mediator.
While dismissing reported attempts by Pakistan to broker talks between the US and Iran, Geopolitical risk advisor, Colonel (Retd) Douglas Macgregor said that, "for the Pakistanis to offer help is sort of like a man who is in a burning building offering you a spare room in the building.”
The Geopolitical risk advisor also said that for Israel, Pakistan “is not going to be viewed in any way, shape or form as neutral” and termed any attempt to host negotiations there as “just ludicrous nonsense.”
In a podcast with ANI, Douglas Macgregor pointed to India as a credible interlocutor.
According to expert MacGregor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is in a position to offer real help, support, and assistance.”
MacGregor said that India’s global standing and balanced ties across major powers make it uniquely placed to facilitate dialogue.
"The reason I pick India is because I think President Trump, if he listens to anybody at this point, is probably going to listen to Prime Minister Modi," he said.
MacGregor also talked about Strait of Hormuz and said that, “How are you going to take this and control it? Where do you put soldiers or Marines to control anything?”
MacGregor cautioned that escalation could backfire, stating, “If we go forward, as I think we will, and we take losses and we look ridiculous, it'll be that much harder to negotiate some sort of agreement in the aftermath.”
